Argan Oil for Dry Hair: How to Use It
Dry hair needs a better method, not more oil. How many drops, when to apply them, and the mistakes that cancel out the effect.

Dry hair is not a hair type but a condition. A strand turns dry when its outer layer stops holding on to water: it becomes rough and dull, and it breaks when you comb it. Heat, sun, hard water and repeated colouring all speed this up. That is where a plant oil comes in, and its role is often misunderstood: it does not add water to the hair, it stops the water already there from evaporating.
Why argan in particular
Moroccan argan oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, and above all it is fine enough to penetrate the strand instead of sitting on the surface. The difference matters: a heavy oil coats the hair and gives an instant but superficial shine, while a fine oil reaches the inner layer and works over time. It is also why it goes on damp hair rather than completely dry hair.
The method, step by step
- After washing, towel-dry until the hair is damp rather than wet.
- Pour a few drops into your palm and rub your hands together to warm the oil.
- Work it from the lengths to the ends, leaving the roots alone.
- Comb through with a wide-tooth comb to spread it evenly.
- Once or twice a week, apply it to the scalp and massage for two minutes with your fingertips before shampooing.
Amount is the most common mistake. Short hair needs three to four drops, long thick hair six to seven. Using more does not moisturise more: it weighs the hair down and makes it look unwashed by the next day.
Mistakes that cancel the effect
- Applying it to completely dry hair: there is no water left to hold in.
- Putting it on the roots every day: the scalp already makes its own sebum.
- Rinsing too soon after the massage, before it has had time to penetrate.
- Rinsing with very hot water, which strips the oil and the sebum at the same time.
Judge the result after three to four weeks of regular use, not after one application.

Hair Growth OilWith argan oil and rosemary essential oilMAD 120Why dry hair stays dry despite the care
Dry hair is short of water, not oil. That is the distinction almost every routine misses: oils get piled onto a dehydrated strand, and oil on its own brings no water. It seals in whatever is there, and if nothing is there, it seals in nothing.
Hence the order that changes everything: water first, as damp hair or a conditioner, then the oil on top to hold it in. Oil applied to completely dry hair makes it shine and feeds it almost nothing.
How much, really
Three to four drops for short hair, six to seven for long or thick hair. Warm them between your palms first, then spread them from the ends up to the mid-lengths, never from the roots.
If your hair looks greasy the next day, it is not that the oil does not suit you: there was too much, or it went too high. Halve the amount before drawing any conclusion.
Split ends: what oil can and cannot do
A split end is a strand that has split in two. No oil glues it back together, and a product that promises to is describing a temporary visual effect, not a repair. What oil actually does is smooth the cuticle, reduce friction and slow the split from travelling further up.
That is useful, and reason enough to use it. But only a cut removes what has already split, and putting off the cut lets the split climb the strand.
Night, water and sun
- A satin or silk pillowcase noticeably reduces friction overnight, one of the leading causes of breakage in dry hair.
- Hard water, common in Morocco, leaves calcium on the strand and makes it rough: a final cold rinse helps, and a shower filter helps more.
- Pool chlorine and sea salt are drying: wet your hair with fresh water before you go in, since a strand already full of water absorbs less.
- Sun fades and weakens hair just as it does skin: a hat, or oil applied before exposure, limits the damage.
How long before you see a difference
Softness and shine show from the first application, because they are a surface effect. For the rest, allow two to three months: hair grows about a centimetre a month, and what you see today is the result of what happened to it over months.
The real indicator is not shine but breakage. Look at how many short broken pieces end up on your clothes and in your brush: that is what drops first when a routine is working.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use it every day? On the ends, yes. On the full lengths, two to three times a week is enough, otherwise the hair gets heavy.
Does it need rinsing? As a pre-shampoo oil treatment, yes. As a finishing touch on damp hair, no: a few drops are left in.
Argan or hair growth oil? Argan works on the lengths, hair growth oil on the scalp. They are not competitors, and many routines use both at different times.
How to recognise good argan oil
Cosmetic argan oil is pale yellow with a light, discreet smell. Culinary argan oil is darker and smells clearly of toasted hazelnut, because the kernels have been roasted: it is for cooking, and it is not applied the same way.
Be wary of an oil that is completely odourless and perfectly clear, which is often diluted, and of a price too low for a product still made largely by hand.
Argan on skin too
The same bottle works on hands, nails, elbows and heels, areas that dry out quickly. One drop on the nail tips at night, two on the elbows after a shower. On the face it suits dry skin, and is less suited to oily, acne-prone skin.
Argan and heat
A drop of oil before the hairdryer or straightener partly protects the strand, but it does not replace a dedicated heat protectant and does not make a higher temperature safe. The best approach is still the same: less heat, for less time, less often.
Argan on fine hair
Fine hair tolerates oil poorly, but it does not have to go without. A single drop, on the ends only, on damp hair, once or twice a week. If the hair gets heavy, a pre-shampoo oil treatment is the better format: it feeds the hair and then rinses out.
